If the device toolbar is not displayed, click View > Toolbars > Device Toolbar. You can expand the device toolbar settings by dragging the drag handle to the right instead of dragging the resize bar. Select your preferred audio host, recording device, and playback device from the drop-down menus.

    No Recording Device

How do I add a Recording device to Audacity?

Click the “Record Channels” drop-down menu and decide if you want to record in stereo with mono.Set the Playback Device and Recorder Device drop-down menus to either your computer’s built-in audio device or the specific audio device you know your cable is connected to.

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Audacity 1.3.Beta

I just installed Audacity to find the first time, but I can’t record. When I select the video button, I get a dialog box saying “Error opening audio device. Please check your input device settings and disable sample rate.” Is the solution in the “Record” section a problem?

Interface host has: MME and Windows Directsound
The playback device includes: main audio driver, speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) and Realtek digital output (Realtek High Definition Audio)
    Recorder contains: device not found

Any help to get Audacity up and running so I can record would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

I just installed Audacity for the first time but I can’t record. When I select the record switcher, I get a dialog box saying “Error opening audio device. Check the input jack device settings and project standard speed.” When I select Edit->Preferences->Devices->Recording, I detect devices not using recording. Is this the problem?

Interface host has: MME and Windows Directsound

Why is Audacity not seeing my microphone?

To fix this, make sure the device can be recognized by the operating system, i.e. either restart Audacity or use the Transport > Rescan Audio Devices command in the Audacity menu bar.

We assume that you did indeed reinstall your audio device if or when you installed Windows 7 over XP or earlier. Also, we just think you have 64-bit audio devices meant for Windows 7 At (or at least Vista if Windows drivers aren’t available yet):

If not, the problem is probablyone of the common behaviors in Windows Vista or 7 where the recording inputs in the mixing system are often not enabled, i.e. inaccessible to applications that “see” them. Log out of Audacity and log in to enable Mixer and select the correct recording device:

Be sure to use the dedicated context menu to view devices with different capabilities and “enable” the one that buyers want to register on. Then again, right-click the moment above the device you prefer to record and click “Properties”. Under the “Advanced” tab, make sure “Default Format” now matches both the project’s bitrate in the bottom left corner of the Audacity screen, and your number of “Record Channels” on shared devices in the “Audacity Settings” tab.

    Storm,

    I mouthUpdated drivers 64 moment.

When I look at the devices displayed (right click on the network speaker bar) I see 3 devices, sometimes all disabled. Gadgets are: microphone (not connected), microphone connected (not connected), line-in connected (not connected). I can’t run it and maybe there is no “Advanced” tab?

    Please show – thanks.

ClickRight click on any of the devices other than “Show Disabled Devices” to really get a complete list of devices. Then plug in the desired device, right click again to finish and click “Activate”. Right click again, stay on “Properties”, then you will see the “Advanced” tab.

    audacity recording device not found

    Storm,

Thank you very much for your help. I think I didn’t describe my problem very well, so don’t forget to give me a clarification. I can’t record through the phone input – all I want and do at the moment is to easily record loud audio (no recording due to external source).

Could you help with this clarification?

Continuous audio recording always requires the selection of a recording device. The recording device must be set to “Stereo Mix”. On Cards Soundblaster it’s called “What U Hear”. The choice of recording device is also described in detail at the link provided.

Unfortunately, not all sound cards have a “Stereo Mix” option, although a workaround must be used. Everything is described here:
